1. Mindfulness-Awareness Training
Upon reflection, most of us would probably agree that the way we show up in the world, the way we relate with and connect or fail to connect with others, is at least in part, if not entirely, driven or determined by the way we relate with and connect or fail to connect with ourselves, The practice of mindfulness, the practice of intentionally paying attention or giving our attention to something, gives us the ability to slow down and make a relationship with our own body, mind, heart and spirit. The path of the peacemaker begins with cultivating or finding peace within. The practice of mindfulness--being present with our own experience, our own body, our own thoughts, feelings, sensations and so on, provides a vehicle for beginning the process of inner healing through which the discovery of inner peace is actually possible, Mindfulness, awareness and simple presence are foundational to bringing intention and consciousness to the inner and outer work of healing and peacemaking.
2. Cultivating Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
Emotional Intelligence or EQ is measured according to four factors:
self-awareness,
the ability to self-manage,
social awareness,
the ability to effectively and beneficially manage or navigate relationships with others.
In Transforming Self, we focus on the first two of these. We cultivate greater self-awareness through mindfulness-awareness meditation and other contemplative practices and exercises. Having developed greater awareness of our inner landscape and of our inner strengths and weaknesses, we learn and practice the skill of state shifting, the ability to recognize when we are in a less resourced of less functional state and to then consciously shift to a more resourced or functional state, As peacemakers and social change agents, we will inevitably and even frequently encounter situations and forms of suffering that will trigger us into an un-resourced state, Unless we have the ability to re-source ourselves in such situations, our ability to serve as peacemakers will be limited accordingly.
3. Transforming Negative Core Beliefs
Core beliefs are largely unconscious ways in which we habitually frame our experiences, Negative and self-limiting beliefs like “I’m not good enough, smart enough, talented enough, etc” or that “Life is unfair, no one could ever love me, I’m no good, etc.” color the way we experience the world and our lives, often to such an extent that we actively participate in turning these core beliefs into self-fulfilling prophecies. On the collective or larger social scale these core beliefs become meta values like scarcity or zero sum thinking and win/lose paradigms. If we aspire to shifting our cultures and societies in the direction of more functional and sustainable values that encourage partnership thinking and win/win paradigms, it is very clear that we need to start by transforming any negative core beliefs we ourselves hold that contribute to the fear based meta values driving the currently dominant and unsustainable culture of individualism, materialism and greed.
4. Envisioning Purpose and Creating Inner Alignment
Being effective in the world requires intention, commitment and passion. These qualities all come from within and manifest most powerfully when we are clear about our life purpose and when our activities in the world are aligned or in synch with that purpose. In Transforming Self, we will begin the process of clarifying or further clarifying our life purpose and then look at how to align our everyday actions and activities with that purpose such that we experience intention, commitment and passion flowing naturally from our this clarity of purpose.
